1. 1 First, check your current virtual memory settings. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, type 'sysdm.cpl' and press Enter. In the System Properties window, go to the 'Advanced' tab and click 'Settings' under Performance. Then click the 'Advanced' tab in the Performance Options window and click 'Change' under Virtual memory. This shows you the current pagefile size and which drive it's on.
2. 2 If the pagefile is set to a fixed size that is too small, or if it's disabled, you'll need to adjust it. In the Virtual Memory window, uncheck 'Automatically manage paging file size for all drives' if it's checked. Then select your system drive (usually C:), choose 'Custom size', and set Initial size to 1.5 times your RAM and Maximum size to 3 times your RAM. For example, if you have 8 GB RAM, set initial to 12288 MB and maximum to 24576 MB. Click 'Set' and then 'OK'.
3. 3 If your system drive is low on disk space, free up space by using the Disk Cleanup tool. Press Windows key + R, type 'cleanmgr', and press Enter. Select your system drive, and the tool will scan for files you can delete. Check 'Temporary files', 'Recycle Bin', and 'Windows Update Cleanup' if available, then click OK to delete them. This ensures there's enough room for the pagefile to grow.
4. 4 After changing the pagefile settings, you must restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Save any open work, then click the Start button, select Power, and choose Restart. After reboot, the new pagefile size will be active.
5. 5 If the error persists, consider increasing your physical RAM. This is a hardware upgrade, but it's the most effective long-term solution. Before upgrading, check your system's maximum supported RAM by looking up your motherboard or laptop model online. Also, close unnecessary background programs to reduce memory usage.
