1. 1 First, ensure that network discovery and file sharing are enabled. Open Settings (Win+I) → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Advanced sharing settings. Under 'Private networks', turn on 'Network discovery' and 'File and printer sharing'. This allows your PC to see other devices and share resources.
2. 2 Check if the network profile is set to 'Private' instead of 'Public'. Go to Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi (or Ethernet) → click on your connection → set the network profile to 'Private'. Public networks have stricter security that blocks file sharing.
3. 3 Verify that you have the correct credentials to access the shared resource. If you're prompted for a username and password, make sure you're using the correct account. If you're accessing a workgroup computer, you might need to use the computer name as the username (e.g., 'COMPUTERNAME\username').
4. 4 Flush the DNS cache and reset the network stack. Open Command Prompt as administrator (Win+R, type 'cmd', press Ctrl+Shift+Enter). Run 'ipconfig /flushdns', 'netsh int ip reset', and 'netsh winsock reset'. Then restart your PC. This resets network protocols that might be corrupted.
5. 5 Temporarily disable Windows Firewall to test if it's blocking access. Press Win+R, type 'wf.msc', and press Enter. Click 'Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off' and disable it for both private and public networks. Try accessing the network resource again. If it works, you need to add an exception for the specific app or port.
