1. 1 First, identify which program is locking the file. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Go to the 'Details' tab and look for any suspicious processes that might be using the file. If you know the file, you can use the 'Resource Monitor' (type 'resmon' in Run) and go to the 'CPU' tab, then expand 'Associated Handles' and search for the file name. This shows which process has the file open.
2. 2 If you find the process, right-click it in Task Manager and select 'End Task'. This forcibly closes the program and releases the lock. Be careful: only end tasks that you recognize, as ending critical system processes can cause instability. After ending the task, try accessing the file again.
3. 3 If you can't identify the process, restart your computer. A reboot clears all locks and is the simplest fix. Save your work and close all programs, then restart. After rebooting, try to access the file again.
4. 4 If the error occurs with a specific program like a game or an office app, check if the program is set to run as administrator. Right-click the executable, select 'Properties', go to the 'Compatibility' tab, and check 'Run this program as an administrator'. Sometimes, a program needs elevated privileges to access certain files, and the lock might be due to permission issues.
5. 5 If the file is on a network drive or synced with cloud storage, check if the sync client (like OneDrive or Dropbox) is holding the lock. Pause syncing temporarily and try again. You can usually right-click the cloud icon in the system tray and select 'Pause syncing'.
