1. 1 Press Windows key + R, type 'cmd', and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open Command Prompt as Administrator. This gives you the necessary permissions to manage junctions.
2. 2 Type 'dir /AL' and press Enter. This lists all junctions and symbolic links in the current directory. Navigate to the folder where you're trying to create the join (using 'cd' command) and run 'dir /AL' to see if there's already a junction there.
3. 3 If there is an existing junction, you need to remove it first. Use 'rmdir ' (e.g., 'rmdir C:\MyJunction') to delete the junction. Be careful not to delete the underlying data — 'rmdir' on a junction only removes the link, not the target.
4. 4 After removing the existing junction, you can create a new one using 'mklink /J ' (e.g., 'mklink /J C:\MyJunction D:\Data'). This creates a proper junction point.
5. 5 Verify the new junction works by accessing the path. If you still get the error, check if the target path is valid and accessible.
