1. 1 Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Look for any processes that might be using the target drive, such as file explorers, antivirus scans, or backup software. Right-click and select 'End task' for any non-essential processes that could lock the drive.
2. 2 Open Command Prompt as Administrator (Win+R, type 'cmd', press Ctrl+Shift+Enter). Type 'subst' and press Enter to see current mappings. If the drive you are trying to use is already mapped, remove it with 'subst : /D'.
3. 3 If the target drive is a network drive, disconnect it via File Explorer: right-click on the network drive and select 'Disconnect'. This frees the drive letter.
4. 4 Wait a few seconds for any pending I/O operations to complete. You can also use the 'openfiles' command in Command Prompt to list open files on the drive, but this requires admin rights and may need to be enabled first.
5. 5 Retry your SUBST command. If it still fails, restart your computer to release all locks, then try again.
