1. 1 Press Windows key + R, type 'regedit', and press Enter. Click 'Yes' to allow Registry Editor. This opens the registry where Windows stores security settings.
2. 2 Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Features. You can copy and paste this path into the address bar at the top of Registry Editor and press Enter.
3. 3 Look for a DWORD value named 'TamperProtection'. If it exists, right-click it and select 'Modify'. Change the value data to '0' and click OK. This disables tamper protection temporarily, allowing you to fix the issue.
4. 4 If the value doesn't exist, right-click on the right pane, select 'New' > 'DWORD (32-bit) Value', name it 'TamperProtection', and set it to 0.
5. 5 Close Registry Editor and restart your PC. After reboot, open Windows Security (click the shield icon in the system tray), go to 'Virus & threat protection', and click 'Manage settings' under 'Tamper Protection'. Turn on Tamper Protection again.
6. 6 Run Windows Update to ensure Defender definitions are up to date. Press Windows key + I, go to Windows Update, and click 'Check for updates'.
