1. 1 First, check if the Windows Update service is present and running: Press Win+R, type 'services.msc', and press Enter. Scroll down to 'Windows Update'. If it's missing, you'll need to re-register it (see step 3). If it's present but not running, right-click it and select 'Start'. Set its startup type to 'Automatic' by double-clicking it, changing the Startup type to Automatic, and clicking Apply.
2. 2 If the service is disabled, enable it: In the same properties window, change Startup type to 'Automatic' and click Start. This ensures Windows Update can run.
3. 3 If the service is missing, you can re-register it using Command Prompt as administrator: Press Win+R, type 'cmd', press Ctrl+Shift+Enter. Run the following commands: 'sc config wuauserv start= auto' and 'sc start wuauserv'. This creates and starts the Windows Update service.
4. 4 Run System File Checker: In the same Command Prompt, run 'sfc /scannow'. This repairs corrupted system files that might have caused the service to disappear.
5. 5 If the error persists, check the registry: Press Win+R, type 'regedit', and press Enter. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv. If this key is missing, you can create it manually, but this is advanced. Instead, consider using the Windows Update Troubleshooter or performing a repair upgrade.
6. 6 Restart your PC and try Windows Update again.
