1. 1 Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Click 'More details' at the bottom to expand the view. Go to the 'Processes' tab and click the 'Memory' column header to sort by memory usage. Look for programs that are using an unusually high amount of memory. Right-click any program you don't need and select 'End task'. This frees up memory immediately. Also, close any browser tabs you don't need, as browsers are notorious memory hogs.
2. 2 Press Windows key + R, type 'sysdm.cpl', and press Enter. Go to the 'Advanced' tab, then under 'Performance', click 'Settings'. In the Performance Options window, go to the 'Advanced' tab and under 'Virtual memory', click 'Change'. Uncheck 'Automatically manage paging file size for all drives'. Select your system drive (usually C:), then select 'Custom size'. Set 'Initial size' to 1.5 times your RAM size (e.g., if you have 8GB RAM, set it to 12288 MB) and 'Maximum size' to 3 times your RAM size (e.g., 24576 MB). Click 'Set' and then 'OK'. This increases the page file, which acts as a backup memory on your hard drive. Restart your PC for the changes to take effect.
3. 3 Press Windows key + R, type 'cmd', and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open Command Prompt as administrator. Type 'sfc /scannow' and press Enter. This scans and repairs corrupted system files. If the error is caused by a corrupted system file, this will fix it. Wait for the scan to finish and restart your PC if it finds issues.
4. 4 If the error occurs with a specific program, check if the program has a memory leak. Update the program to the latest version, as developers often fix memory leaks. Also, try running the program in compatibility mode if it's an older program.
5. 5 If you have less than 8GB of RAM, consider upgrading your RAM. This is a hardware change, but it's the most effective long-term solution. You can check your motherboard's specifications to see what type of RAM you need.
