1. 1 Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog. Type 'tsconfig.msc' (without quotes) and press Enter. This opens the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration. If you see a message that this service isn't installed, you may need to install the Remote Desktop Services role via Server Manager (if on Windows Server) or use the alternative steps below.
2. 2 In the left pane, click on 'Connections'. In the right pane, right-click on 'RDP-Tcp' and select 'Properties'. This opens the properties for the Remote Desktop Protocol listener. This is where you can adjust the maximum number of sessions allowed.
3. 3 In the Properties window, go to the 'Network Adapter' tab. Look for the 'Maximum connections' option. If it's set to a specific number, increase it to a higher value (e.g., 999999) or select 'Unlimited' if available. Click OK to save. This tells Windows to allow more concurrent sessions, which should resolve the error.
4. 4 If you don't have the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool (common on Windows 11 Pro/Enterprise), you can use the Registry Editor instead. Press Windows key + R, type 'regedit', and press Enter. Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server'. Look for a DWORD value named 'MaxInstanceCount'. If it doesn't exist, right-click on the right pane, select New → DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it 'MaxInstanceCount'. Double-click it, set the value to a large number like 999999, and click OK. Close the Registry Editor and restart your PC.
5. 5 After making the change, restart your computer to ensure the new limit takes effect. Then try connecting again. If the error persists, you may need to check if your Windows edition has a hard limit (e.g., Windows 11 Home only allows one remote session). In that case, consider upgrading to a version that supports more sessions or use a third-party remote access tool.
