1. 1 First, verify your VPN credentials. Check with your network administrator that your username, password, and pre-shared key (if used) are correct. This is the most common cause.
2. 2 Press Windows key + R, type 'ncpa.cpl', and press Enter. This opens Network Connections. Right-click your VPN connection and select 'Properties'.
3. 3 Go to the 'Security' tab. Under 'Type of VPN', try changing the protocol from 'Automatic' to 'L2TP/IPsec' or 'IKEv2' depending on your server's requirements. Sometimes the default doesn't match the server.
4. 4 Click 'Advanced settings' and ensure the authentication method matches your server. If using a pre-shared key, select 'Use pre-shared key for authentication' and enter the key exactly as provided.
5. 5 If you're using certificates, make sure the correct certificate is installed. Press Windows key + R, type 'certmgr.msc', and press Enter. Look under 'Personal' → 'Certificates' for a valid certificate from your organization.
6. 6 Check the IPsec settings. Open an elevated Command Prompt (Win+R, type 'cmd', press Ctrl+Shift+Enter) and run 'netsh advfirewall set global statefulftp disable' to disable stateful FTP, which can interfere with IPsec.
