1. 1 First, run the Windows Update Troubleshooter: Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run. This automated tool can fix common issues like corrupted update files.
2. 2 If that doesn't work, clear the update cache: Press Win+R, type 'services.msc', and press Enter. Find 'Windows Update' in the list, right-click it, and select 'Stop'. Then, open File Explorer (Win+E) and navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. Delete all contents of this folder (you may need to select all and press Shift+Delete). This removes corrupted downloaded update files.
3. 3 Restart the Windows Update service: Go back to services.msc, find 'Windows Update', right-click, and select 'Start'. Then restart your PC.
4. 4 Run System File Checker and DISM: Open Command Prompt as administrator (Win+R, type 'cmd', press Ctrl+Shift+Enter). Run 'sfc /scannow' and wait for it to complete. Then run 'DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth'. These commands repair corrupted system files and the system image.
5. 5 Check your disk for errors: Open Command Prompt as administrator and run 'chkdsk C: /f /r'. You'll be prompted to schedule a check on restart. Restart your PC and let the check run. This can take an hour or more, but it will fix disk errors that might be causing the bad compression buffer.
6. 6 After all repairs, try Windows Update again: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
