1. 1 Check the connection: If the error occurs on an external drive, try a different USB port or cable. Loose connections can cause read faults. For internal drives, ensure the SATA/power cables are firmly connected.
2. 2 Run a disk check: Open Command Prompt as administrator (Windows key + R, type 'cmd', press Ctrl+Shift+Enter). Type 'chkdsk X: /f' (replace X with the drive letter) and press Enter. This will scan for file system errors and attempt to fix them.
3. 3 If the error is on a specific file, try copying it to another location. If the copy fails, the file may be corrupted. Try opening it with a different program or recover it from a backup.
4. 4 Check the drive's health: Use the built-in 'Error Checking' tool in File Explorer. Right-click the drive, select Properties, go to the Tools tab, and click 'Check'. This will scan for bad sectors.
5. 5 If the drive has bad sectors, run 'chkdsk X: /r' to mark them and recover readable data. This may take a long time and require a restart.
