1. 1 Press Windows key + I to open Settings, then go to 'Network & Internet' > 'VPN'. Click on your VPN connection and select 'Advanced options'. Check the 'Authentication method' — it should be set to 'Microsoft: Smart Card or other certificate' if your company uses certificates. If it's set to 'Username and password', that might be the issue. Change it to the certificate method and click 'Save'.
2. 2 If you don't have a certificate installed, you need to get one from your IT department. They will provide a .pfx or .cer file. Double-click the file to install it. In the Certificate Import Wizard, choose 'Local Machine' as the store location, then 'Place all certificates in the following store' and browse to 'Personal'. This installs the certificate so Windows can use it for VPN authentication.
3. 3 Open the VPN client (if you're using a third-party client like Cisco AnyConnect). Go to its settings and look for 'Authentication' or 'Security' options. Ensure that 'Certificate' is selected as the authentication method and that the correct certificate is chosen from the dropdown. If not, select it and reconnect.
4. 4 Press Windows key + R, type 'certmgr.msc' and press Enter. This opens the Certificate Manager. Navigate to 'Personal' > 'Certificates'. Look for a certificate that is valid (not expired) and has a private key icon. If you see an expired certificate, right-click and delete it. An expired certificate can cause this error.
5. 5 If the error persists, reset the IPsec/IKE settings. Press Windows key + X and select 'Windows Terminal (Admin)'. Type 'netsh int ipsec reset' and press Enter. Then type 'netsh int ike reset' and press Enter. This resets the IPsec and IKE policies to default, which can clear corrupted settings. Reboot your PC and try the VPN again.
