1. 1 Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. This shows all running processes. Look for any program that might be using the file or folder you're trying to access. For example, if the error occurs during a game update, look for the game's executable or its updater.
2. 2 If you find a suspicious process, right-click it and select 'End Task'. This forces the program to close, releasing the lock on the file. Be careful not to end critical system processes.
3. 3 If you don't see an obvious process, use the 'Resource Monitor' to find which process has the file open. Press Win+R, type 'resmon', and press Enter. Go to the 'CPU' tab, expand 'Associated Handles', and search for the file name. This will show you exactly which process is using the file.
4. 4 Once you identify the process, close it gracefully if possible, or end it from Task Manager. Then try your operation again.
5. 5 If the error persists, restart your computer. This clears all file locks and is a simple but effective fix.
