1. 1 Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog. Type 'devmgmt.msc' and press Enter. This opens Device Manager, which lists all hardware connected to your PC. Look under 'Ports (COM & LPT)' for any device with a yellow exclamation mark — that indicates a problem.
2. 2 Right-click the problematic port device and select 'Uninstall device'. Check the box that says 'Delete the driver software for this device' if available, then click Uninstall. This removes the faulty driver configuration. After uninstalling, restart your PC — Windows will automatically reinstall the correct driver.
3. 3 If the error persists, press Windows key + R, type 'services.msc', and press Enter. Scroll down to 'Plug and Play' service. Right-click it and select 'Restart'. This service manages hardware detection and can clear stuck configurations.
4. 4 Open Command Prompt as administrator (press Windows key, type 'cmd', right-click 'Command Prompt', select 'Run as administrator'). Type 'sfc /scannow' and press Enter. This scans all protected system files and repairs any corrupted ones that might be causing the port issue.
5. 5 If the problem is specific to a program, right-click the program's shortcut, select 'Properties', go to the 'Compatibility' tab, and check 'Run this program as an administrator'. Also try 'Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 7' if it's an older app.
