1. 1 Press Windows key + R, type 'regedit', and press Enter. Click Yes to allow Registry Editor to open. This is where Windows stores configuration settings. Be careful—changes here can affect your system.
2. 2 Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem'. This key contains settings for the file system, including short name generation.
3. 3 Look for a value named 'NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation'. If it exists, double-click it. If the value data is '1', it means short name creation is disabled. Change it to '0' to enable short name creation. If the value doesn't exist, right-click on the right pane, select 'New' > 'DWORD (32-bit) Value', name it 'NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation', and set its value to '0'.
4. 4 Close Registry Editor and restart your computer for the change to take effect. After reboot, try the operation that caused the error. It should now work because short names can be generated.
5. 5 If you don't want to enable short names globally, you can rename the file or folder to a shorter name that doesn't require a short name. For example, if the file name is too long, shorten it to under 255 characters and avoid special characters like '?' or '*'.
