1. 1 Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer. Right-click on the drive that's causing the error (usually C:) and select 'Properties'. Go to the 'Tools' tab and click 'Optimize' under 'Optimize and defragment drive'. This opens the Optimize Drives tool.
2. 2 In the Optimize Drives window, select the drive and click 'Analyze'. This will show the current fragmentation percentage. If it's high (above 10%), click 'Optimize' to start defragmentation. This process rearranges file pieces into contiguous blocks, making the disk more efficient.
3. 3 If the error occurs during defragmentation, it might be because the drive is too fragmented for the tool to handle. In that case, run a disk cleanup first. Press Windows key + R, type 'cleanmgr', and press Enter. Select the drive and click OK. This removes temporary files and frees up space, making defragmentation easier.
4. 4 If the drive is an SSD, do not defragment it. Instead, use the 'Optimize' option which runs TRIM. SSDs don't need defragmentation and it can reduce their lifespan. The Optimize Drives tool automatically detects SSD and runs TRIM.
5. 5 If the error persists, run 'chkdsk /f' on the drive. Open Command Prompt as administrator (Win+R, type 'cmd', Ctrl+Shift+Enter) and type 'chkdsk C: /f' (replace C: with the correct drive letter). This checks for file system errors and fixes them, which can resolve fragmentation issues.
