1. 1 Open Storage Settings by pressing Win+I, then go to System → Storage. This shows you a visual breakdown of what's taking up space on your drive. Click on 'Temporary files' to see what can be safely deleted.
2. 2 In the Temporary files screen, check the boxes for 'Windows Update Cleanup', 'Delivery Optimization Files', and 'Thumbnails'. Click 'Remove files'. This deletes leftover update files and other junk that can free up several gigabytes.
3. 3 Run Disk Cleanup: Press Win+R, type 'cleanmgr', and press Enter. Select your system drive (usually C:) and click OK. Click 'Clean up system files' and select all categories, especially 'Windows Update Cleanup' and 'Previous Windows installations'. Click OK to delete. This is a deeper cleanup that can free up even more space.
4. 4 Uninstall unnecessary programs: Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Sort by size to see the biggest offenders. Click on any app you don't use and select 'Uninstall'. This can free up significant space, especially for large games or software.
5. 5 Move personal files to another drive: If you have a second drive or an external drive, move large files like videos, photos, and documents there. Use File Explorer (Win+E) to cut and paste them.
6. 6 After freeing space, restart your PC and try Windows Update again: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
