1. 1 Identify the affected drive. If the error occurs when using an external drive, connect it and note the drive letter. If it's your system drive (C:), proceed accordingly.
2. 2 Run Check Disk on the affected drive. Open Command Prompt as administrator (Windows key + X → Terminal (Admin)). Type 'chkdsk X: /f /r' (replace X with the drive letter) and press Enter. If it's your system drive, you'll need to schedule a check on restart. This scans for and fixes file system errors.
3. 3 If the drive is external, safely remove it and reconnect it. Sometimes a loose connection can cause this error. Also, try using a different USB port.
4. 4 Update or reinstall the driver for the storage device. Press Windows key + X and select 'Device Manager'. Expand 'Disk drives', right-click the problematic drive, and select 'Uninstall device'. Then restart your PC; Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.
5. 5 Run SFC and DISM to repair system files. In Command Prompt, type 'sfc /scannow' and then 'DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth'. This ensures system files are intact.
6. 6 If the drive is corrupted beyond repair, you may need to format it. Right-click the drive in File Explorer, select 'Format', and choose a file system like exFAT or NTFS. Note: This erases all data, so only do this if you have backups.
